For your consideration: How To Really Save Money With A Bicycle.
We’re writing this today to help some of you folks out there that just got a great idea, because of the gasoline prices:
I’m Gonna Get A Bike To Save On Gas!!!!!
Are you one of these people? Do you know someone that has recently uttered these words?
Then . . .
Freeze!!! Right there . . .
Getting a bike to save money on gas is a great idea.
Here’s the wrong way to do it:
- You’re a person that depends on their clothes looking good in order to make a living;
- You’re a person that hasn’t ridden a bike in 32 years;
- You decide to go over to Wal-Mart to drop $299.00 on a something with dual head and tail shocks called a “Magna.”
Here’s the right way to get a bike to save money on gas:
- You get honest with yourself about how much you’re really going to use your newly acquired bike, because you got a lot of unused life left in your other outdoor movement projects, e.g., rollerblades, cross-country skis, skateboard, etc., and you realize that you don’t need to add to your collection;
- You DON’T ride your bike to work, because the weather is too unpredictable and because bike riding involves a large risk of getting your clothing dirty;
- You go to a good bike shop that also sells used bikes;
- If you plan on riding your bike on paved roads, you DON’T get a bike with any shocks at all, but instead get a bike with road or hybrid tires;
- You get a major, reputable name bike to drop $150.00 on;
- You use your bike religiously for those short trips you’re always making to your buddy Fritz’s house two blocks from yours, or the redbox 4 blocks away, or even to your favorite ice cream joint a mile away as these are all trips where the weather and the condition of your clothing really matter to no one!
You’ve been educated. Now get real with yourself, your biking NEEDS and ride like the wind!
Good luck out there.

Interesting suggestions. I
Interesting suggestions. I have been thinking of getting a bike for commutting to work, but my better half will nothing of such. I had an accident last month while riding on a commercial bike (we use bike as a means of transportation in Nigeria) because of traffic problem. That was it. I sustained some injury and now I can't even say the word out. ;-) She will have nothing of such.

Hi. Please join the Bicycle
Hi. Please join the Bicycle to Work! LinkedIn networking group. Members pledge that they will try to ride their bicycle to work or on an errand at least once a week. Although the benefits should be obvious, let me outline them here.
Right now people in the industrialized world are facing two very grave problems: obesity and a growing scarcity of oil. Compounding this problem is the new food shortage brought about, in part, by the conversion of food cropland to bio-fuel crop production. Most people feel powerless to help, but there is one thing that we can do. Ride our bicycles to work.
If everyone would agree to ride their bikes to work one day per week we could cut oil consumption by as much as 10-15%. No one would argue that riding a bike burns more calories than driving the car. Although popular politically right now, most bio-fuels consume more energy than they produce. We would be much better to eat those bio-crops then use our own energy to transport us around.
So spread the word. Make it a movement! Bicycle to work one day a week and do your part to cut back obesity and the overuse of oil and precious cropland.

lol I love your wrong
lol I love your wrong reasons to do it. I could definitely see a bunch of old out of shape people getting inspired and buying it when they will never use it. That is pretty much what infomercials bank on. If I end up working close to my home I think I will try to bike to work often. I'm an environmentalist and like to exercise so it works out perfectly for me.

I was laughing my way thru
I was laughing my way thru this article!
My workplace is moving to a new facility- from downtown to the 'burbs. My bus commute time will go from 20 mins each way to almost an hour each way since I will still need to go downtown, then transfer. And strangely, the new workplace is about equidistant to my house as is downtown.
Along my journey to think about what I could do about my new commute, biking was tossed around as an option. Our weather in Central NY goes from 30 below to 103 temperature wise- extreeeme! And- I am not in a job where I could be sweaty and unkempt from a bike ride. Thoughts of- a recumbent bike might be easier- and other crazy thoughts came into mind.
Thankfully- I found a willing carpooler who I can pay the equivelent of bus fare and get door to door service.
I don't know a single bike
I don't know a single bike commuter who wears their work clothes while riding to work.
Unless your job requires "business formal" (and sometimes even then) looking sufficiently nice at work is not a problem.
Iron clothes, fold neatly into bike pannier (you can get good prices on waterproof ones), add a comb and hair product for "unkemptness" and you're on your way.
Even if you just bike to work on days with no threat of rain or snow, you can save significantly on gas.
You got it! YOU don't know
You got it!
YOU don't know a bike commuter that wears their work clothes while riding, but we sure know a bunch of bike commuters first starting out that have TRIED to wear their work clothes while riding and learned their lesson the hard way.
You just saved somebody the trouble of a messy outfit by teaching them how to do it right.
Thanks!
