"Profit" From A Talking Cell Phone For The Blind.

For your consideration: "Profit" From A Talking Cell Phone For The Blind.

We think this device is a hit! You’re not going to save money with it. In fact, at $2000 a pop, you’re going to spend quite a bit of money on it. The deal, however, is that the blind and hard-of-sight will "profit" by saving tons of time and energy with this new device.

The Kurzweil-National Federation of the Blind Reader promises to use a Nokia cell phone’s camera to do something extremely helpful to those with sight problems. In a National Public Radio report, this morning, a representative from the National Federation of the Blind asked an audience of concerned listeners the following question: “How many of you have ever tried to get coffee from one of those free coffee stands without having to ask someone which is the decaf and which is the hot water?” The audience roared with laughter. Then the representative took a picture of coffee dispensers and let the camera do the talking. The camera read the photographed image with its microprocessor, and then spoke the word “decaf” that was printed on the handle of the coffee dispenser!

That’s right. This camera phone can take pictures of words and read them to you. So, if you have sight problems and you need some serious tech help, we think this is perfect for you and your loved ones. You can even take pictures of whole paragraphs of words from maps, guidebooks, menus and all sorts of printed texts and have their contents read aloud. We know this is going to circulate more of those pesky cell phones out into the world, but it’s hard to “image-n” a reason not to take advantage of this innovation to make life a little more convenient. Sometimes even innovation trumps saving and investing.

Good luck out there.
